Gareth Southgate’s famous Pizza Hut ad is a little less painful to watch in 2018

Gareth Southgate is out in Russia doing a pretty good job of atoning for his notorious missed penalty at Euro 96, when he kicked the ball straight at the German goalkeeper and took the blame for England’s failure to bring football home that year.

Now that he’s a style icon who’s setting the standard for modern manhood – not to mention managing England all the way to a World Cup semi final – Southgate’s rehabilitation has come far enough that we can almost enjoy this painfully funny old Pizza Hut ad.

Two of England’s most notorious penalty flunkers – Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce, who both failed to score against the Germans at Italia 90 – welcome Gareth Southgate into the losers’ fold, sniggering like schoolboys and showing that time — and the Pizza Hut dollar — can heal most wounds.
