Post-emissions Volkswagen says it’s really our friend with bland new brand campaign

Volkswagen – it’s not VW of ‘Das Auto’ fame any more since the emissions scandal broke – is going back into brand advertising for the first time since its fiddling of emissions was revealed with this new campaign from DDB Germany, with some sort of input from DDB offices elsewhere in Europe.

It shows various VW (sorry Volkswagen) models through the ages and their happy, smiley occupant/owners. VW isn’t a car, you understand, it’s a lifelong companion.

And it’s pants, whether they be loon pants or skinny jeans or whatever pants are in fashion this season.

We recognise that doing this must have been like walking on broken glass.

But it’s still pants – this is DDB, home of game-changing VW advertising for chrissakes.

  1. This must have been the brief from Hell. Not a bad proposition, but a disappointingly forgettable idea-free execution.
