Bloomberg launches presidency bid with $37m ad blitz

Media tycoon and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg – ‘call me Mike’ – has enlisted what he hopes is the power of advertising in his bid for the Democratic Presidential nomination, spending an eye watering $37m in a week to launch his campaign. Other Democrat candidates are spending a total $15.3m.

He’s the guy, it says, who “made good and did good.”

Bloomberg, a former Republican, has no political base or organisation, but neither did Donald Trump.

His candidacy raises all sorts of issues although it will no doubt be welcomed by many who abhor Trump and fear the current Democratic front runner Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are too left wing to lure back voters from Trump.

But has the presidency of the most powerful country on earth become something you can buy? If so, when will Mark Zuckerberg have a go?
