Ebay picks VCCP for European account

Shows how much we know – we suggested yesterday that London agency VCCP had gone of the boil recently, in part due to its unfortunate experience with Asda which moved there and then back to Saatchi & Saatchi in double quick time.

Well now it’s won one of the most intriguing pitches of the year so far, landing eBay’s European account which was handled by DDB Berlin. VCCP is part-owned by WPP.

You never quite know with companies like eBay. Are they committed to advertising or is just something they think they should do a bit of? Although it’s noteworthy that online businesses are now among the biggest advertisers on TV. Ebay is also trying new lines of business, like ebay wine in the US (below).

Ebay has dropped off the radar a bit, certainly in comparison to its online rival (in some respects) Amazon, which uses advertising judiciously and well. So it’s a juicy challenge for VCCP.
