Two Christmas crackers from M&S and Waitrose

Another agency waving a fond farewell – let’s be charitable – to a big client this Christmas is RKCR/Y&R to Marks & Spencer (AMV BBDO is in the same chilly boat with Sainsbury’s).

And, what do you know, it’s come up with the best M&S ad I can recall. This features a resourceful Mrs Claus.

This is what M&S advertising should have been like – not that ‘Magic & Sparkle’ nonsense.

MAA creative scale: 9.

Adam&eveDDB has quite a job on its hands with Waitrose at Christmas, Waitrose being owned by the king of Christmas advertising John Lewis.

Did it make one last year? Can’t remember. Anyway if it did it wasn’t especially memorable.

This is a deft effort though, tapping into JL-type emotions but grittier.

It’s a terrific film – does it say Waitrose is the place to shop as strongly as it might?

MAA creative scale: 8.5.
