Edelman founder Daniel J. Edelman dies at 92

Daniel J. Edelman (left), who founded what is now the world’s largest PR firm back in 1952, has died aged 92.

Edelman (as it now is) remains a private company, run by son Richard with various other family members in senior roles. Its clients include Microsoft, GE and Walmart.

Edelman senior began his career as a journalist before forming his Daniel J. Edelman PR firm. He is credited with introducing the ‘media tour’ to consumer PR which involved company front men embarking on an arduous tour of various media outlets to promote their wares. one such person was actor Vincent Price who fronted a famous campaign for California wine in 1966. Here’s Vincent revisiting wine territory in 1985.

Daniel Edelman always claimed that PR was a cut above other marketing disciplines as companies like his had the ear of the CEO not just the marketing this and thats; an approach now pursued energetically by Richard Edelman who jets around the world meeting business leaders and politicians, described in his 6AM blog.
