JWT’s top creative in China, Lo Sheung Yan, is to be the Cannes International Festival of Creativity’s first Chinese jury president.
Yan, who’s known as Mayan by his chums, will lead the Outdoor jury. Last year JWT Shanghai won the Press Grand Prix for its ‘Heaven and hell’ work for Samsonite. Samsonite also won the Advertiser of the Year award at Asia’s Spikes festival.
Mayan, whose full title is executive creative director North East Asia and chairman China, says: “The Cannes Lions Festival represents and celebrates the work of people who are at the forefront of our industry. This appointment is a great honour and recognition for our fellow creatives in China.
“Our talent and limitless passion to push boundaries have slowly turned people’s impression of China from one of an emerging market into that of an exciting country.”
China is set to become the world’s second-biggest ad market after the US and JWT owner WPP claims to have the biggest presence of any of the big Western marcoms groups there. WPP agency Ogilvy & Mather surprised adland by poaching M&C Saatchi’s London-based veteran ECD Graham Fink to lead its creative in China earlier this year.
