WPP teams with sports giant IMG in new global licensing operation

WPP is always looking for new ways to turn its client list into money and the latest is a joint deal with sports and entertainment giant IMG, the company started originally by Mark McCormack to handle star golfers like Arnold Palmer, to offer its big global clients licensing opportunities.

The new unit (not a company yet apparently) will be headed by IMG executive Bruno Maglione (pictured) and staffed by IMG people.

WPP CEO Sir Martin Sorrell says: “More than ever, licensing is emerging as one of the new creative ways of developing brands and sales. It is a capability we see as increasingly important to our clients.”

With the London Olympics coming up next year to be followed by the World Cup and next Olympics in Brazil in 2014 and 2016 respectively the battle is well and truly on for the minds (and wallets) of clients who increasingly focus their efforts around big global televised events.
