Aussie government gets tough with cigarette packs

Anyone brave enough to light up a gasper in Australia in years to come probably deserves a medal if the Australian government succeeds in passing its planned legislation on cigarette packs.

Health minister Nicola Roxon is not just getting rid of brand logos but planning to plaster the front of packs with even more gruesome images of the diseases allegedly caused by smoking.

The big tobacco companies, including the UK’s BAT, are reported to be lining up their lawyers to contest the new packs on trademark grounds although their chances of doing so successfully are thought to be slim.
