Amazon takes on Apple and Google with ads on new Kindle

Amazon’s new Kindle book reader, due to start shipping in the US in May, will feature full screen screensaver ads and banner ads at the bottom of pages.

The new Kindle at $114 will be $25 cheaper than the current highly-successful model but Amazon’s foray into online advertising seems to be more than just a cost reduction device.

The company has recently begun recruiting for what it calls its Ad Products Group and is promising successful applicants that it plans to “leverage our culture of customers’ obsession and change the industry.”

Well you can’t be much more upfront about it than that, so watch out tablet rival Apple and former online ads monopolist Google.
