No-one seems to know whether this new emporium will be called Comparethemarket or Comparethemeerkat but the price comparison site is opening its first, pop-up, store at 80 Regent Street in London on October 28. For two days only.
The site has been running a Facebook campaign claiming the new store’s purpose is to publicise head meerkat Alexsandr’s forthcoming autobiography but this seems a bit over the top. Even Jeffrey Archer doesn’t open an actual store to flog his new book.
Regent Street is a strange mix these days, the usual traditional, posh retailers like Liberty, Austin Reed and toy shop Hamley’s and a new Apple store, supposed to be temporary, that still has people queueing around the block to bulk buy iPhones and ship them to Asia.
Although it’s just for two days it’s still an ambitious move for a price comparison website and will doubtless test the UK public’s affection for ad agency VCCP’s meerkats.
It might be quite a test for shop staff too if they have to dress up in meerkat costumes, as they surely will.
