FCC comes down hard against Google Verizon internet plans

Nobody expected the US Federal Communications Commission to like the deal supposedly being cooked up by Google and US ISP Verizon to introduce a new class of internet; faster access which companies would pay for.

But the FCC has responded with praiseworthy vigour, chairman Julius Grenachowski stating that any deal that doesn’t respect the “freedom and openness of the internet for consumers will be unacceptable.”

Google and Verizon have still to make any on the record comments about the talks and it may be that, bearing in mind Grenachowski’s comments, they’ll kick this one into the long grass for a year or two.

But as the internet becomes more crowded it will surely re-emerge.
