World Cup curse hits Theo Walcott and M&S

It was ever thus, pick a player to feature in your World Cup ad and you can almost guarantee that they’ll be dropped from the final squad, be injured or be arrested for nicking pennies from a charity box.

Marks & Spencer’s ad for its silly World Cup suits (whoever heard of a three-piece suit with a badge on it…maybe they don’t have this feature in the shops) features Arsenal tyro Theo Walcott whose awful form has resulted in him being dropped from Fabio Capello’s final 23.

M&S is putting a brave face on it, saying it’s sponsoring the whole squad, South Africa bound or not.

Actually it could have been far worse. The other three players include Emile Heskey, who only got into the final squad because Wayne Rooney likes playing alongside him, and Matthew Upson. Most pundits would have taken Spurs’ Michael Dawson ahead of Upson.

The fourth is banker Steven Gerrard – so one good choice anyway.
