Is Brand Republic planning a Murdoch-style pay wall?

Well we only ask because the Haymarket Publishing-owned free advertising, marketing and media website is undergoing a revamp and, as a key part of this, is also planning to get all readers to register.

This is usually a prelude to putting some site content behind a pay wall, as The Times and Sunday Times are now trying to do.

Somehow or other, despite the exponential increase in online advertising, most websites still struggle to gain enough from advertising to justify the costs of all that news.

The main exceptions are techie sites where people happily click away on the ads (sad people that they are).

Anyway Brand Republic is an excellent product but maybe the display and job ads don’t bring in the revenue required.

If it goes to subscription (for some of it at least) you’ll just have to stick to us.

Until we start charging too, of course.
