Did Italian knickers inspire the John Lewis campaign?

The world is agog at the John Lewis campaign by Adam & Eve featuring Billy Joel’s tune ‘She’s always a woman…’ and it also features in an ad for Italian lingerie brand Calzedonia.

And there are a number of other resemblances besides. John Lewis told the Guardian that it was just a coincidence (or set thereof).

Your correspondent prefers to think of it as inspiration. This comes in all shapes and sizes in adland. The inspiration for the famous Renault Papa and Nicole campaign is said to be a French porn film where the protagonists wake up the following morning with the lines: “Papa? Nicole!”
