Marcoms giant WPP has four big (or supposedly big) creative agencies in London – JWT, RKCR/Y&R, Grey and Ogilvy – and 49 per cent of the relatively new CHI. But, rather strangely, according to Campaign/Nielsen figures for 2012, JWT, Grey and Ogilvy are languishing in the lower reaches of the top 20 agencies by billings [...]

WPP agencies Grey and JWT have been appointed ‘lead’ agencies on giant bank HSBC’s £400m global creative account while Publicis Groupe’s Saatchi & Saatchi has won its wealth management business. The business was put up for review last year. JWT was the incumbent although the bank’s last notable advertising was from Lowe with its ‘world’s [...]

Well here’s a turn-up; Gillette has dropped agency-of-the-moment Wieden+Kennedy from the shortlist for its $300m account, leaving Grey and Saatchi & Saatchi to compete against incumbent BBDO (Publicis has also been dumped). Gillette is owned by Procter & Gamble and it looked odds-on that W+K would make it through to the final round at least [...]

China and Japan aren’t always the best of pals (that’s enough serious political analysis for now) and Japanese marcoms giant Dentsu has therefore found it difficult to expand in its neighbour’s huge market. The traditional Dentsu model, providing absolutely everything including its own media channels, hasn’t worked very well anywhere else; other countries like to [...]

We remarked the other day, apropos Coca-Cola, that clients were beating a path to Grey Advertising’s door. But if you want to do that in Japan it’s tricky, the office is tucked away. One version has it that it takes a seven-minute walk, four minutes of skating and a two-minute horse ride from Ebisu station [...]

OK, here we go: after a not very scientific analysis of the ruminations of Paul Simons, Giles Keeble, Jerry Judge, George Parker, Stuart Smith and myself we come to: Agency of the Year Wieden+Kennedy London. For lots of good stuff, TV, online, posters and print. The big test, for W+K London, as we’ve said before, [...]

“I wish I’d done it” is the subjective test for a great ad. Which of this year’s crop of TV ads makes my list? Chipotle? Not really. The Guardian’s ‘Three Little Pigs’? Maybe, but I still prefer Webster’s ‘Points of View’ for BMP (a very different brief, I know). (Editor’s note: Giles didn’t feel able [...]

We thought about writing something about a ‘WPP team’ being appointed to handle a ‘global branding brief’ for pharma giant GSK (GlaxoSmith Klein as was) but then noticed that it was: Grey London with a bit of help from Brand Union with one John Rudaisky, fresh from his triumphs as head of WPP’s ‘Team Vodafone’ [...]

WPP is planning to merge its Grey and Ogilvy agencies in Sweden: which may be a solution to a local problem or a sign of things to come at the world’s biggest marcoms network. WPP says the merger of the two agencies based in Stockholm is intended to create a bigger shop. “The strengths in [...]

The reinvention of Grey as a creative advertising agency, as opposed to an account handling operation that occasionally produced something approximating to ads, has been nigh-on miraculous and one of the WPP-owned network’s biggest stars is Tor Myhren (pictured), president and CCO of Grey New York. Myhren was honoured as one of the brightest minds [...]
