Apple has just produced another series of record numbers with soaring sales of iPhones and iPads adding more than $35bn to its value (which had fallen recently due to misplaced fears that its growth was slowing), adding $12.6bn to its cash pile which now stands at about $110bn. Pity it doesn’t pay tax on much [...]

Word reaches me that Nick Brien (pictured), chief executive officer of Interpublic Group’s troubled leviathan McCann Worldgroup, will be stepping down very shortly. Possibly within a few weeks. The size of Brien’s no doubt handsome severance package is likely to remain a mystery, the reason for his departure less so. McCann has, in recent years, [...]

After a year-long review Interpublic’s McCann Erickson has lost its foundation account Exxon Mobil, the world’s biggest oil company, to Omnicom’s BBDO although media agency Universal McCann retains its media business. Other losers include Omnicom’s DDB which had handled the Exxon fuels business since 2000 and Euro RSCG which loses the corporate account. Exxon spends [...]

Steve Jobs’ decision to step down as CEO of Apple aged 56 is hardly a surprise but it’s still a shock. Jobs, who founded the company before being kicked out and coming back to rescue it with the launch if the iPod, iPhone and iPad, has been bedevilled by ill-health for a decade now, being [...]

Reports from the US suggest that Omnicom agencies BBDO and DDB have made the final cut for Exxon Mobil’s creative ad account, along with historic Exxon (Esso) partner McCann-Erickson. Exxon is still the world’s biggest company by market value (ahead of Apple) although its ad budget no longer lives up to that status at arelatively) [...]

Relatively of course, it still spends $100m on its global fuels account through DDB and quite a bit more on ‘lubricants’ through McCann’s but the days when the likes of Exxon and Esso and rivals like Shell were marketed like big consumer products has long gone. Exxon Mobil, the two companies merged in 1999, is [...]
