Blow for Havas as McCann wins RB’s global Dettol

Havas appears to have been motoring nicely since Yannick Bolloré succeeded David Jones as CEO but all isn’t entirely rosy – especially on the RB front. RB, formerly Recikitt-Benckiser, was Havas’ biggest global account but bits of it have been disappearing lately.

Now McCann has won Dettol/Lysol worldwide, undoubtedly a blow as it’s the world’s biggest cleaning product. McCann handled Dettol in India (below), Havas in all other markets. Havas has also seen Airwick depart for Droga5 New York and Finish head off to Wieden+Kennedy.

RB executive VP global category development Roberto Funari says: “Dettol and Lysol are iconic brands and the quality of the strategic thinking and creativity we have seen from McCann has been outstanding.” Funari also says that Havas will be RB’s “lead strategic and creative partner for new strategic initiatives.”

It was probably inevitable that RB, which spends about £1bn advertising worldwide, wouldn’t keep all of this with one agency. Rivals Procter & Gamble and Unilever use a number of agencies despite sporadic attempts to cut down their agency lists. But this may be an example of the David Jones effect.

McCann in the UK has also won the Alzheimer’s Society charity account, one of the bigger UK charities.
