Brazil’s Almap BBDO leads Cannes winners

Brazil is the fastest-growing advertising market on earth and in Sao Paulo’s Almap BBDO it has the hottest agency, at least according to the judges at Cannes.

Almap won the press Grand Prix for a Billboard magazine ad after Ogilvy & Mather Mexico was disqualified and swept up numerous other gold lions (admittedly there are more lions at Cannes than in the Serengetti these days but there you go).

Omnicom’s BBDO and DDB were the two top networks followed by WPP’s Y&R while Leo Burnett Sydney was the media agency of the year. Hasn’t Starcom travelled as far as Sydney yet?. Unilever was top advertiser.

The Americans acquitted themselves creditably with Y&R New York coming second to Almap with Wieden & Kennedy Portland in third place. Germany’s Jung Von Matt Hamburg won the best independent agency gong, a new award.

As for the Brits AMV BBDO won the best direct agency of the year (and it isn’t even a direct marketing agency). And that was about it.
